In a broader sense, Curcuma is a genus of plants in the ginger family that includes around one hundred species. In a narrower sense, it generally refers to Indian saffron (Curcuma longa) and, above all, the spice obtained from its rhizome (an underground growing shoot). In Indian as well as Thai cuisine, turmeric in dried and ground form, but also as a whole tuber, has played an important role since ancient times. Curcuma has also been prized as a remedy in Asia for thousands of years, as evidenced by the mention of the plant in Indian Vedas. In them, Indian saffron is described as sacred.
The important components of the Curcuma rhizome include essential oils, acids, and the yellow pigment curcumin. This combination of active ingredients has a number of health-promoting effects.
Curcuma stimulates, for example, the production of gastric juice and bile, thereby promoting healthy digestion. It also has an anti-inflammatoryeffect and, as a natural antioxidant, reduces free radicals in the body. Within the plant itself, curcumin is synthesized for protection against microbial pathogens.
